I have an old Windows app where I used WPF for the UI and Microsoft Access as the database.
The app worked fine on my development machine, but that’s because I had Microsoft Office installed, especially Microsoft Access.

However, when I deployed it to my client’s machine, it wouldn’t run.

I encountered an error message similar to this:

A problem was encountered while trying to log into or create the production database.
Details: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

Have you ever needed to deploy a Microsoft Access app (such as
.accdb
or
.mdb
) to a client machine without installing the full Microsoft Access application?
If so, you’ll need to ship and install the Microsoft Access Runtime package on the target PC.

According to Microsoft’s website, here’s what Microsoft Access Runtime does:

The Microsoft Access Runtime enables you to distribute Microsoft Access applications to users who don’t have Microsoft Office installed on their computers or a version of Microsoft Office that doesn’t include Access.
The Microsoft Access Runtime includes the Access Database Engine (ADE), which can be used to facilitate the transfer of data between Microsoft Office System files and non-Microsoft Office applications through OLEDB, ODBC, and DAO interfaces.
