Just like any other macOS apps, Microsoft only supports Visual Studio Code for the last few versions of macOS available. Some new release raises the minimum macOS version, so the installer you download today may refuse to install on an older Mac.

What if you need a certain version of Visual Studio Code for your legacy macOS?

In this post, I archived the newest Visual Studio Code version that still supports each macOS release.

Is It Safe and Genuine?

That is a good question. Never trust anything you read on the internet, including my website.

The download links I provide here are official download links from Microsoft. They are genuine and safe to download.

I do not host the installers or use third-party servers. The files all come directly from Microsoft.

When you click the download links here, the download will come directly from Microsoft in one of these domains:

  • update.code.visualstudio.com, the official Microsoft update service for Visual Studio Code
  • vscode.download.prss.microsoft.com, the Microsoft CDN that serves the installer files

All you need to do is select and download the version that matches your macOS.

Download Visual Studio Code for Older Mac

Each entry below is the latest Visual Studio Code version release that still supports that macOS version, followed by the architectures it ships. Pick the build for your Mac, or take the Universal build when you would rather not think about it.

Currently, the latest version of Visual Studio Code supports macOS 12 (Monterey) or later. The download links to macOS 12 Monterey or later will point to the latest version, and the rest are pointing to a certain final version that is still compatible with that macOS version.
