We’re currently experiencing the global memory supply shortage (or we call it “RAMmageddon” or the “RAMpocalypse”) from 2025 to this day, halfway of 2026. I was lucky to upgrade my PC’s RAMs and SSDs before 2026 started. It was expensive too back then, but not as bad as August 2026.
If you’re currently owning a fully working Laptop or PC today, you should be grateful, keep it, and take care of it. It’s not worth it to buy a new one with the normalized RAMmageddon price.
But, if your Laptop is broken, stolen, or you never had a Laptop in the first place, and you need it now, then you have to buy it.
Same with my relative, they need a new laptop for school. They want a brand new laptop with around a $300 budget. They just want to use it for basic stuff like:
- web browsing with Google Chrome
- Microsoft Office
- Zoom Meeting
- Netflix streaming
- and some light gaming like Roblox and Minecraft
I decided on the laptop’s absolute minimum specification that fit that usage, and here’s the spec (I use MacBook Neo as a basic tech spec reference):
- 256GB SSD
- 8GB of RAM
- 4 Core / 8 Thread CPU with integrated GPU
It’s a bit hard to find a good laptop with a $300 budget during 2026 RAMmageddon. Of course, there are some used laptops that fit. But in this case, they wanted a brand-new laptop.
Most laptops with that price range have drawbacks from my expected specs. Some of them use a weak Intel Celeron or AMD Athlon CPU, some of them only use 4GB of RAM, some of them use only 128GB of SSD, and some of them even still use old TN LCD screen panels.
Some people may think that those drawbacks were not an issue. You may think “it’s probably fine for now”. But believe me, those will just turn the laptop into e-waste sooner than you realize. So, I don’t bother looking at them.
I decided to search around online. But then I found one brand that fit my minimum tech specs. I ended up with an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) laptop which is branded with “SPC Style Vibe 5” in Indonesia.
After a few days of testing, I’m actually happy with this laptop. Here’s my quick review of this particular SPC Style 5 Vibe laptop.
SPC Style 5 Vibe Tech Specs
This laptop has all the absolute minimum tech specs as needed for web browsing, Microsoft Office, Netflix streaming, and even light gaming. It’s equipped with AMD Ryzen 5 APU from 2019, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD.
It’s good enough for 2026 usage and probably will still be usable for 3-5 years from now. Let’s dive deep into each of the components.
Mainboard, CPU, and GPU
This laptop is equipped with AMD Ryzen 5 3500U APU with 4 cores and 8 threads. It has a base clock of 2.1 GHz speed with boost speed up to 3.70 GHz.
This chip is architected with Zen+ (12 nm). I know, it’s a very old AMD Ryzen APU from 2019. But it’s way better than some Intel Celeron CPU laptops out there.
The mainboard is manufactured by a company from Indonesia called PT Adi Pratama Indonesia, which has a good track record for other products like their PC monitors.
I also read some reviews that their customer support is also great. So you’re in the right hand of the aftersales department.
This laptop uses an integrated GPU that is called AMD Radeon Vega 8. Don’t expect anything fancy with this GPU. But some light gaming like Roblox and Minecraft should be enjoyable using this laptop.
RAM
One of the expensive parts of this laptop is obviously the RAM. That’s why we call it RAMmageddon.
Obviously, the manufacturer needs to cut costs so they can still sell this laptop with an “affordable” price. Since this laptop uses a Ryzen 5 APU from 2019, it needs only DDR4 RAM.
This laptop uses the RAM module manufactured by SK Hynix, which is one of the big 3 RAM manufacturers out there. I’m not sure if it’s newly manufactured or just refurbished from old storage though. But as long as it works without any issues, I won’t complain.
I expected that this laptop uses DDR4 RAM modules because the CPU still uses Ryzen 5 3500U. The maximum frequency of RAM this chip can handle is 2400MHz, so the installed RAM is actually overkill (it has DDR4-2666). So if you plan to install a new RAM stick, just get a SO-DIMM DDR4 2400MHz.
This laptop has 2 slots of RAM. So if you have an extra budget, which I highly suggest, you can buy another 8GB RAM stick. The laptop will run better and smoother.
SSD Storage
Another part that is very expensive during the AI boom is the storage, specifically SSD.
These AI companies are hoarding the best SSD they can get, because they need the fastest possible storage to train their AI slop models. It honestly makes me mad how ridiculous the price of SSD is.
But no matter how expensive it is, I’m glad this laptop still uses an SSD instead of an HDD, even though it’s not the best SSD I’ve seen.
This laptop is equipped with an M.2 2280 SATA SSD. The one I got uses a KingFast brand SSD.
Yep, you read that right. It’s KingFast, not Kingston.
I’m not familiar with this KingFast brand. I hope it’s durable enough for the next 5 years, even though I’ve read some bad experiences online.
Even though the SSD is shaped as M.2 2280, it’s still using the SATA interface. That means this SSD’s read/write speed is limited to around 500 MB/s.
I get it, the SSD’s price right now is crazy inflated. So I understand they need to cut costs here and there. It’s not the SSD I expected, but it’s still way better than an HDD.
If one day in the future the price of SSDs goes back to normal (I freaking hope so), you can always replace it with a higher storage and faster speed brand.
Laptop Ports
This laptop has so many ports. You don’t need a dongle at all.
On the left side, this laptop has:
- Kensington lock
- Charging port
- HDMI port
- USB-A 3-port
- USB-C port
The great thing here is that you can charge this laptop either using the included 45W power adapter through the round charging port or a USB-C charger through the USB-C port. So if you already have a 45W+ USB-C charger, you can just leave the round charger behind.
On the right side of the laptop, there are:
- SD Card reader
- USB-A 2.0 Port
- USB-A 3.0 Port
- Gigabit LAN Port
- Audio Jack
As I said earlier, you have everything you need. No need to get a USB-C dongle.
Camera
This laptop has a 2.0 MP front web camera. The quality is acceptable, not great like a MacBook camera, but still usable for video calls.
As long as you use it from a room with enough lighting, it should be enough.
Laptop Case Design
The design is surprisingly good. Even though it’s made of plastic, it still looks clean and professional. The gray color reminds me of Space Gray MacBook.
Surprisingly, the hinge can be pushed to 180°, even my MacBook can’t do that. So if for some reasons you want the laptop and screen to lie on the bed, feel free to do it.
Keyboard
The great thing here, compared to its competitors with the same price range, this laptop has a backlit keyboard. You can use it during the night with minimal lighting.
Even the MacBook Neo doesn’t have a backlit keyboard, so this is a win.
The keyboard itself is a joy to type. Not loud and the key travel is similar to the MacBook.
Software and Drivers
You can get the drivers from SPC’s official website. Find the right laptop model, which is “Style 5 Vibe”. The link will direct you to their Google Drive. From there, you can download your needed drivers.
This laptop already has Windows 11 pre-installed, even though not activated. The drivers are also already installed. Unless you’re going to fully reinstall, you don’t really need those driver files.
But hey, it’s better to keep it just in case.
Customer Service
The SPC brand itself is a very old brand in Indonesia. Based on their website, they’ve been around since the 1980s. It’s just that they recently sell consumer laptops, so you rarely hear their brand. I know them from their PC Monitor products, which also are great products.
I’ve read in some forums that they also have good customer support. Even though I hope I’ll never use that support, you can get their customer support number from the attached sticker.
Final Thoughts
That is my story and experience purchasing USD 300-ish during AI Boom or RAMmageddon. I hope it’s just temporary and we’ll laugh about it in the future about how ridiculous this era is.
AI is cool, but the greedy people and companies handling it are not!
